FAU Takes C-USA Opener 4-2

Game 2 Set For Saturday At 3 PM (Central Time)
Florida Atlantic batted around in the bottom of the first inning to post four runs on the scoreboard on five hits. Two runs were already in when FAU delivered the key hit, a tricky fly between three Rice fielders sprinting toward the eventual landing area near the left field line. The ball landed just fair to drive in two runs and stretch the lead to 4-0.
Credit to Rice starter Matt Canterino for battling the rest of his outing and without allowing any damage after that. The junior right-hander surrendered only two more hits and no walks while striking out six in the next 5.0 innings. That allowed Rice to use just one pitcher out of the bullpen, Kel Bordwine, with two more C-USA games still to play. Bordwine delivered another solid outing with 2.0 scoreless innings and no walks allowed.
The Blue & Gray also continued to fight on the offensive side. Andrew Dunlap doubled home Justin Collins from first base with two away in the top of the fifth. Rice was back within two in the sixth, 4-2, when Cade Edwards scored on Aaron Beaulaurier's sac fly to right. Rice was able to bring the potential tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth, only to have FAU escape both threats.
Rice is now 8-12 on the season and 0-1 in C-USA action. Florida Atlantic moved to 12-7 overall and 1-0 in conference. Game two of the weekend series is set for 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's finale is 11 a.m. All times listed are Central Time.
