Bobcats Slip Past Rice Friday, 1-0

Owls Next Face Baylor Saturday At 3 pm
The contest between the longtime foes quickly developed into a pitcher's duel where any offense would be at a premium. Rice starter Matt Canterino was solid scattering just four hits with no walks while striking out nine in 7.0 innings of work. He was charged with an unearned run in the top of the seventh after back-to-back fielding errors with one away could have ended that inning.
Four Texas State pitchers combined to make the 1-0 lead stand up. Rice finished with two hits and two walks to get men on base in four different innings. The Owls were 0-for-5 batting with runners in scoring position, but there was one time where the normally hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park had a role in keeping Rice off the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the fifth Justin Collins drew a leadoff walk and senior slugger Andrew Dunlap followed by launching a deep fly to center. Dunlap's blast would have been out of most college ballparks, but with Minute Maid's spacious 409 feet to center Texas State had enough room to make a catch on the warning track. Instead of a possible 2-0 Rice lead, there was still no runs for either team at that point.
In the top of the seventh it was Rice's Aaron Beaulaurier who made a sensational catch, Willie Mays-style, of a Texas State fly hit out near the warning track in center. The Owls are now 3-7 on the season. Texas State improved to 6-3 overall.
The College Classic games continue downtown thru Sunday. Rice next meets Baylor at 3 pm Saturday. Sunday's game vs. TCU is scheduled for 7 pm.
