Owls Open Weekend With Shutout
2/8/2019 3:31:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The Lead: The Rice men's tennis team rebounded from their loss at LSU last Sunday, blanking Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-0 in a match moved indoors to the Boniuk Family Tennis Center in Houston on Friday afternoon.
Doubles: The Owls (6-1) and Islanders (7-2) split matches on courts one and three, while the matchup on court two was even through six games. Rice's Eric Rutledge and Adam Oscislawski broke serve in the seventh game and held serve in their final two games to clinch the point on an ace by Oscislawski.
Singles: Sumit Sarkar remained unbeaten and Jacob Eskeland picked up his team-leading sixth singles win of the dual season while Adam Oscislawski bounced back from his first loss of the year last weekend to deliver the clinching point for the Owls.
Efe Ustundag: "I'm pleased the way we rebounded from the LSU match with a solid effort today. I thought we did a good job in doubles, especially at two and three, at being fairly energetic and intense. Sumit and Jacob took care of things at one and two in singles. They have really been performing well. It was good to see Adam get over the LSU match. He was pretty hungry all week in practice and he was obviously ready to get back on the court. A very solid match and hopefully we'll be outside on Sunday against a very tough Elon team that is coming off some great matches against some ACC teams. They've been battle-tested and I think it will be a good one."
Up Next: The Rice men will join with the Rice women's team to host their second combined dual of the 2019 home schedule on Sunday. The men will take on Elon, who is 4-1 with a dual against Texas A&M Corpus Christi scheduled for Saturday, while the Rice women will face Kansas State. First serves are set for 11 a.m. All fans in attendance will receive schedule posters for both teams in addition to free pizza. The Owls will also host a youth clinic after the match. Admission is free to all Rice tennis matches at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
