Elon Rallies to Down Rice
2/10/2019 3:32:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The Lead: The Rice men's tennis team jumped out a 3-1 lead, only to see a furious rally in the final match of the day fall just short as the Owls dropped a 4-3 decision to Elon on Sunday as part of a combined dual with the Rice women's team at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Doubles: The Owls took the early lead and improved to 7-1 on the year in doubles by racing to 6-2 wins at the first and second positions.
Singles: Rice used wins by Jacob Eskeland and Campbell Salmon to take a 3-1 lead, but Elon rallied to tie the score at 3-3, leaving the outcome to be settled at the first position. Sumit Sarkar bounced back from a first set loss to even his match, then found himself in a 5-0 hole after Elon closed to 3-3 with a win at the fifth position. He fought off multiple match points to close the gap to 5-4, but was broken on at deuce in the 10th game. Eskeland improved to 7-1 in dual singles this year and Campbell, who joined the Owls in January, picked up his third dual win in four decisions.
Efe Ustundag: "We got exactly what we were expecting from Elon. They are a gritty team that makes a lot of balls. We thought we would have the upper hand in doubles, but in singles, we had a couple guys who it didn't really have it today. Adam (Oscislawski) was in a really hard-fought match. Every game in his last set was back and forth. I think it was at deuce in about four of five of the last games. Jacob continues to be very steady and Campbell has been able to acclimate himself to college and college tennis very quickly. He was a factor in getting us going in doubles and then it was nice to see him pick up a good quality win in singles."
Up Next: The Owls will not return to GRBTC for nearly a month, as they set out on a road swing that begins next weekend with matches at Middle Tennessee and Vanderbilt. They will compete in the Blue-Gray National College Tennis Classic the following week and wind up the slate of road matches with a trip to TCU on March 2. They return home on March 5 when they host Louisiana.
