Owls Look to Keep Making History
Out to their best 21-game start in program history, the Rice Owls women's basketball team hits the road this week as one of the nation's hottest teams in the country. Rice faces second place WKU on Thursday looking to tie the school record for most consecutive wins (12). Rice's 11-game win streak is currently tied for the third-longest active streak in the nation.
Longest Rice Win Streak
2004-05: 12 straight
2003-04: 12 straight
2018-19: 11 straight (current)
Longest Active NCAA Win Streak
1. Oregon - 14
2. Baylor/Missouri St. - 12
3. Rice/Mississippi St./Lamar - 11
National Recognition
For a second straight week the Owls were recognized in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll by receiving votes. In addition, Rice has moved up to No. 37 in the latest RPI Rankings.
Road Warriors
After starting the season 0-2 on the road the Owls have reeled off seven consecutive victories away from Tudor Fieldhouse, which is tied for the third-longest active road win streak in the nation behind Drexel (12) and Oregon St. (11).
Conference Domination
The Owls are one of just nine teams in the nation to start 9-0 in conference play. Rice has won eight of those nine games by 10 or more points with an average margin of victory of 15.4 points.
Ogwumike C-USA Player of the Week
Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike was named the C-USA Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 17 ppg, 14.5 rpg and 4 apg in victories over Charlotte/ODU, respectively.
Last Time Out
The Owls earned a hard-fought 48-42 victory over Old Dominion last Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse for the team's 11th straight win overall, one shy of matching the program record set in each of the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Despite shooting just 28 percent for the game, the Owls found a way to win behind a gritty defensive performance and late execution on the offensive end. The Owls limited ODU (16-6, 7-3) to season-lows in points, field goal percentage (23.1%), field goals made (12), and assists (5). Ogwumike led the Owls with 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds for her team-leading 11th double-double of the season while senior guard Nicole Iademarco contributed 10 points, all of which came in the critical second half.
