
Owls Tie School Record with 12th Straight Win

Defeat WKU 68-46 in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, KY – The Conference USA-leading Rice Owls (RV) women's basketball team cruised to their 12th straight victory with a convincing 68-46 triumph at second place WKU Thursday evening at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Rice (19-3, 10-0) tied the single-season school record for most consecutive victories accomplished by the 2003-04 and 2004-05 Owls. The Owls will now have an opportunity to establish a program record winning streak on Saturday when they face Marshall (14-9, 8-2) at 11 a.m. (CT).
Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike recorded her 12th double-double of the season, and the sixth in her last nine games, with a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds. Ogwumike was joined in double-figures by Nicole Iademarco and Sydne Wiggins, each of whom scored 12 points on a combined 13-of-24 shooting from the field.
Redshirt sophomore center Nancy Mulkey came close to a double-double, scoring 8 points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds and 5 blocks.
The Owls established season-highs in field goal percentage (58.7 percent) and defensive rebounds (34) while winning their eighth consecutive road game, the third-longest active streak in the nation.
Rice held their opponents to below 30 percent shooting for a fifth straight game and haven't allowed opponents to reach 60 points in 10 consecutive contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
The Owls started the game as a team on a mission by jumping out to a 15-1 lead over the first six minutes, making seven of their first eight shots from the field. Ogwumike scored nine of the 15 points and the Owls outscored the Lady Toppers 21-5 in the quarter. Rice scored 16 of their points in the paint and shot a sizzling 82 percent from the field (9-of-11). On the flipside, Rice held WKU to 14 percent shooting (2-of-14).
Quarter 2
The Lady Toppers outscored the Owls 17-14 in the second period with 13 of those points coming off Rice turnovers. However, Rice kept a comfortable 35-22 halftime lead by shooting 50 percent from the field.
Quarter 3
In the third quarter the Owls opened up a lead as large as 19 points and outscored the Lady Toppers 19-13 in the period. Iademarco scored eight points in the quarter, which included a pair of three-pointers, to help give the Owls a 54-35 lead going to the fourth.
Quarter 4.
WKU trimmed the Rice lead down to 56-45 with 5:53 remaining but the Owls had an answer, reeling off eight straight points from four different players.
UP NEXT
The Owls conclude their road trip on Saturday at Marshall with tip-off set for 11 a.m. (CT). Rice will return home to host FIU on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. (CT).
