HOUSTON – No. 25 ranked UC-Irvine recorded an 11-4 win over the Rice baseball team Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park.

With wins in both of the first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday, the Anteaters completed the three-game sweep of the weekend series. The loss was Rice's fifth in a row this season after a rugged week of games that included No. 14 ranked Texas on Tuesday and No. 24. Arizona on Wednesday. Rice is now 2-6 on the season. UCI improved to 5-2 overall.

The Anteaters put runs on the board in both of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. Rice fielding miscues that could have ended two innings helped UCI score two unearned runs in the fourth, and another five more unearned runs in the sixth, to stretch the lead to 9-0.

Rice rallied back for four runs in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff homerun by Trei Cruz and doubles by Braden Comeaux and Cade Edwards. Down 9-4 the Owls had a chance to cut the margin closer with a bases-loaded, no-outs, situation in the bottom of the seventh. The Anteaters, however, worked out of the inning with a 1-2-3 double play and strikeout before adding two more runs in the eighth for an 11-4 final.

Comeaux finished the series batting 5-for-12 (.417) with two runs scored and two doubles for a .583 slugging percentage. The Owls also had a silver lining with the season debut of junior pitcher Addison Moss. The veteran right-hander from Spring, Texas, was sidelined last week against Rhode Island, but pitched 1.2 innings of relief without allowing any earned runs and recording two strikeouts.

Rice's season opening homestand comes to a close on Wednesday (Feb. 27). The Owls host longtime foe Prairie View at 6:30 pm at Reckling Park before playing in the annual Shriner's College Classic next weekend downtown at Minute Maid Park.
