Owls Blank Islanders for Third Straight Win
2/13/2019 5:12:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Lead: The Rice women's tennis team closed out an unbeaten homestand by sweeping past Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The Owls (5-2) won their third straight dual and now will travel to Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday to face the nationally ranked Kansas Jayhawks at noon on Sunday. Kansas is ranked 12th in the Oracle/ITA poll and 13th in the Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis poll which were both released today.
Doubles: Rice grabbed the doubles point for the sixth time in seven matches this year thanks to a quick win at the second position by 35th ranked Anastasia Smirnova and Priya Niezgoda followed by a 6-4 win by Michaela Haet and Linda Huang at the first line.
Singles: Rice raced out to first set advantages on all six courts and never looked back. Anna Bowtell won her fifth singles dual of the spring while finishing first. Priya Niezgoda matched her moments later with her fifth win and Linda Huang delivered the clinching point almost as soon as Niezgoda concluded her match.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "The team did a nice job of taking care of business, especially in singles. We came out with good energy and good focus. Overall, it was a good quality day for us and now we will get ready for Kansas. We saw them in Orlando (in January at the Orlando Invitational) and we had some great battles. They are in the top 15 in the country. Playing at their place will be a big challenge, but I think our team will be up for it. I've seen a lot of growth in our team in the last couple of weeks since we were on the road at LSU. I'm hoping we will continue to build on the things we've been working on and take to Lawrence for hopefully a great match."
