Jayhawks Down Owls, 6-1
2/17/2019 3:34:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Lead: Priya Niezgoda won in singles and combined with Anastasia Smirnova for their second win over a ranked opponent this year, but 12th ranked Kansas handed Rice a 6-1 defeat at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday.
Doubles: Smirnova and Niezgoda, who are currently ranked 35th, improved to 6-1 on the season with a 7-5 win over the Jayhawks 57th ranked Anastasia Rychagova and Sonia Smagina, but the Jayhawks emerged with the point by winning a tiebreaker on court three.
Singles: Rice was forced to shift the lineup after Michaela Haet suffered an injury during doubles and was pulled from singles. Kansas stormed out to take the first set on all six courts and held its momentum to win on five courts before Niezgoda rallied to even her match against Nina Khmelnitckaia by winning a tiebreaker in the second set and followed that with an 11-9 win in the super set to score a point for the Owls.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "As a collective unit, that was the best doubles point we were playing all season. A bit unfortunate with the injury to Mickie there in the middle of it but we still battled hard in the doubles and had some chances. We started out ok in singles but just weren't able to sustain it on several courts and, against a team like Kansas, you cannot afford any loose errors or lack of focus. We'll take what we learned from today as we head into training next week."
Next Up: The Owls return home to host Texas-Arlington at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday at 11 a.m.
