Owls Drop Road Contest at Texas Southern

HOUSTON – Despite a season-high 20 points from junior center Nancy Mulkey, the Rice Owls women's basketball team was unable to erase a second half deficit in a 63-56 road loss Saturday afternoon at Texas Southern.
The Lady Tigers (3-4) outscored Rice (4-4) 34-29 in the second half, including a 23-11 disparity in the third quarter. TSU capitalized on 23 Rice turnovers, which they converted into 20 points.
Senior guard Erica Ogwumike joined Mulkey in double-figures with 12 points in the loss. TSU was led in scoring by Ciani Cryor (20 points), Niya Mitchell (14 points), and Ataiya Bridges (14 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls outscored TSU 19-14 over the first 10 minutes behind nine points from Ogwumike. Rice ended the quarter on a 9-2 run, which included second-chance points from Mulkey at the free throw line with just two seconds remaining.
Second Quarter
Rice pushed the lead to as much as 26-20 midway through the quarter following a Mulkey layup but TSU outscored the Owls 9-4 over the final 3:40 to cut the Rice lead to 30-29 at the half.
Third Quarter
TSU used a 10-0 run, which included a pair of three-point makes, to gain separation and closed the period with a 52-41 advantage entering the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
Mulkey kept the Owls close with eight of her 11 second half points coming in the final quarter but the Owls were unable to get any closer than 59-53 with just under a minute remaining.
Up Next
The Owls will return to Tudor Fieldhouse on Sunday, Dec. 15 when they host Prairie View at 2 p.m. in the final non-conference home contest.
