Owls Set to Face Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech in Puerto Rico
Rice will make the program's first-ever regular season trip outside the continental United States this week when they head to San Juan, Puerto Rico to take on Virginia Tech (8-1) and Georgia Tech (8-1) Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Owls will conclude their non-conference portion of their schedule with their first-ever meetings against the Hokies and Yellow Jackets.
About Virginia Tech
The Hokies will be playing their first game since an 87-65 victory over Gardner-Webb on Dec. 8 and are currently No. 34 in the RPI rankings. Tech ranks 14th in the NCAA in field goal percentage (47.4 percent) and is 16th in defensive rebounding (30.7 rpg). The No. 2 scoring offense (79.4 points per game) in the ACC, Tech currently has four players averaging double-figure points, led by junior guard Aisha Sheppard (17.1 ppg). Tech was picked to finish 10th in the ACC Preseason Poll.

Picked to finish 11th in the ACC Preseason Poll, the Yellow Jackets (No. 32 RPI) will enter play in Puerto Rico winners of three straight and are slated to face No. 11 Texas A&M on Friday. The Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in scoring defense (42.7 ppg), third in three-point FG defense (19.9 percent), fourth in rebound margin (+14.9) and eighth in defensive FG percentage (31.6). Senior guard Francesca Pan leads the 'Ramblin Wreck in scoring (14.9 ppg) while junior forward Lorela Cubaj is nearly averaging a double-double (11.2 ppg/9.8 rpg).

The Owls cruised to a 77-55 victory Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse in the non-conference home finale. Rice (5-4) shot a season-best 53 percent from the field while also establishing season-highs in free throws made (27) and attempted (39). Erica Ogwumike recorded her first double-double of the season with a monster performance, scoring a game-high 25 points along with a season-high 14 rebounds.
Stingy Defense
Dating back to last season the Owls have held 29 straight opponents below 70 points and 30 straight opponents below 45 percent shooting. Thru nine games Rice is allowing opponents to score 55.3 points per game (32nd in NCAA) and shoot just 34.5 percent (30th in NCAA).
