Owls Dominate Lady Panthers, 77-55

Ogwumike scores 25 points, grabs 14 rebounds in victory
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team cruised to a 77-55 victory Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse in the non-conference home finale.
Rice (5-4) shot a season-best 53 percent from the field while also establishing season-highs in free throws made (27) and attempted (39).
Senior guard Erica Ogwumike recorded her first double-double of the season with a monster performance, scoring a game-high 25 points along with a season-high 14 rebounds. Junior center Nancy Mulkey (11 points) and freshman wing Lauren Schwartz (10 points) also scored in double-figures.
The Owls dominated the Lady Panthers (2-7) in points in the paint (38-6) while holding a 21-10 advantage in bench scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls jumped on Prairie View with an 18-2 run over the first six minutes and never looked back, outscoring the Lady Panthers 20-4 in the quarter. Ogwumike scored nine points in the period and the Owls locked in as a team defensively, holding Prairie View to 2-of-17 shooting (11.8 percent) from the field.
Second Quarter
Ogwumike added eight more points in the second period, making a pair of shots from the field and a 4-of-4 performance at the free throw line. Rice outscored the Lady Panthers 16-12 in the period to claim a 36-16 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter
Prairie View outscored Rice 19-17 in the quarter but the Owls maintained a 53-35 lead after 30 minutes. Ogwumike scored eight more points in the period and was one of six different Owls to score in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Owls blew the game open late with a 14-2 run, leading by as much as 77-46 with 1:44 remaining. Seven different Owls scored over the final 10 minutes as Rice shot 9-of-11 from the field in the period.

The Owls will head to Puerto Rico next week for a pair of games in the Puerto Rico Classic. Rice will first face Virginia Tech (8-1) on Friday, Dec. 20 at 12:30 p.m. (CT) followed by Georgia Tech (8-1) on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3 p.m.
