Owls Comeback Falls Short vs. Virginia Tech

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – A fourth quarter comeback by the Rice Owls women's basketball team on Friday came up just short in a 54-45 loss to Virginia Tech from Mario Morales Coliseum at the Coqui Classic.
Rice (5-5) cut a 12-point fourth quarter deficit down to 49-45 with 1:36 left in regulation but were unable to get any closer. The Owls were led in scoring by senior guard Erica Ogwumike, who led all players with 23 points on 8-of-22 shooting (7-of-8 at the free throw line) to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
The Owls outscored Tech 30-16 in points in the paint but hit just 1-of-12 from three-point territory.
Virginia Tech (9-1) had a pair of players in double-figure scoring, led by 18 points from guard Aisha Sheppard. Guard Dara Mabrey added 12 points. The Hokies made 9-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc and had a 16-6 advantage in bench points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls outscored Tech 18-16 in the opening 10 minutes behind nine points from Ogwumike. Rice registered 12 points in the paint in the quarter as five different players got on the scoreboard.
Second Quarter
Both teams struggled offensively combining for just 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting. A 6-1 close to the quarter by the Hokies gave them a 24-23 halftime edge.
Third Quarter
After a Destiny Jackson fastbreak layup to open the quarter, Tech went on a 10-0 run to open up a 34-25 lead with 5:03 remaining in the quarter. Ogwumike helped keep the Owls within striking distance by scoring seven points the rest of the period as Rice trailed 40-32 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
After falling behind 48-36, the Owls went on a 9-1 run and trimmed the deficit down to 49-45 on an Ogwumike second-chance layup. However, the Owls were unable to get any closer as the Hokies made 5-of-6 attempts from the free throw line down the stretch.

The Owls will conclude their non-conference portion of their schedule tomorrow when they face Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. (CT) from Puerto Rico.
