
Owls Rally to Defeat NAU, 71-57

HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team erased an 11-point halftime deficit with an offensive display in the second half to defeat the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, 71-57 Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls (4-3) outscored NAU (1-4) 49-24 over the final 20 minutes to record their second straight win and move to 3-1 at home. Senior guard Erica Ogwumike led all players with a season-high 26 points, shooting 10-of-20 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. The C-USA Preseason Player of the Year scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half and contributed a game-high eight rebounds in 32 minutes.
Rice also got double-figure points off the bench from sophomore guard Haylee Swayze (14 points) and eight points from freshman wing Lauren Schwartz.
The Owls remained unbeaten this season when winning the battle of the boards (41-36) and committing fewer turnovers (15-17). Rice also had an edge in bench points, 28-17.
Jacey Bailey (22 points) led NAU in scoring but was the only player in double-figures for a team that came into the contest averaging 77 points per contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
In a quarter that saw a total of six lead changes, it was NAU who took a 14-13 advantage after 10 minutes of play on a made field goal by Regan Schenck right before the buzzer. Ogwumike scored seven points in the period but Rice committed seven turnovers and made just 2-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc.
Second Quarter
The Lumberjacks outscored Rice 19-9, making 9-of-15 shots from the field while holding the Owls to 21 percent shooting. The 'Jacks bench contributed 12 of the 19 points and NAU scored 14 points in the paint. Swayze and Wiggins each made three-pointers in the quarter but the Owls trailed 33-22 at the half.
Third Quarter
NAU held a 42-30 lead with 4:34 remaining in the quarter before the Owls began to chip away. Rice would go on a 16-0 run over the next four minutes in which Ogwumike scored eight of the points, including a three-point play the old-fashioned way. In total, Rice outscored NAU 24-11 in the quarter and held a 46-44 lead going to the fourth. The Owls scored 16 points in the paint while defensively limiting the 'Jacks to 21 percent shooting.
Fourth Quarter
The 'Jacks briefly took a 47-46 lead in the opening seconds of the quarter but Rice owned the final 10 minutes by a 25-13 advantage to win by the final score of 71-57. The Owls used an 11-0 run to break the game open with three-pointers from Ogwumike and Schwartz and never looked back. Rice made 4-of-6 from three-point territory and turned the ball over just once in the period.

The Owls won't be back in action for another seven days when they travel across town to Texas Southern on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
