Owls Face Crosstown Foe Texas Southern
After a week away from competition, the Rice Owls women's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Saturday when they make the short trip to Texas Southern. Rice has won their last two games by an average off 22.5 points and will be looking for their third straight win overall. TSU has dropped four of their last five games, including a 74-50 setback at Colorado on Tuesday. After six straight road games to open the season the Tigers will be making their home debut on Saturday.

Graduate transfer point guard Ciani Cryor (Rutgers) ranks fourth in the NCAA in assists per game (7.2) while senior forward Niya Mitchell is third in the country in steals per game (4.33).
Last Time Out
The Owls erased an 11-point halftime deficit with an offensive display in the second half to defeat the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, 71-57 at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls outscored NAU 49-24 over the final 20 minutes to record their second straight win and move to 3-1 at home. Senior guard Erica Ogwumike led all players with a season-high 26 points, shooting 10-of-20 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. The Owls remained unbeaten this season when winning the battle of the boards (41-36) and committing fewer turnovers (15-17). Rice also had an edge in bench points, 28-17.
Winning with Defense
Dating back to last season the Owls have held 27 straight opponents below 70 points and 28 straight opponents below 45 percent shooting. Thru seven games Rice is allowing opponents to score 54.3 points per game (28th in NCAA) and shoot just 34.4 percent. Last year's reigning NCAA shot blocker Nancy Mulkey has picked up where she left off last season and is currently 13th in the country in total blocks (21). Last season Rice ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 52.8 points per game on 35.0 percent shooting (ninth in the nation).
Taking Advantage at the Line
The Owls are currently ranked 21st in the nation in free throw percentage (78.1 percent). The trio of Erica Ogwumike (21-25), Lauren Schwartz (20-24), and Nancy Mulkey (9-10) have combined to shoot 50-of-59 (.847) at the stripe.
Keeping Hands Out of the Cookie Jar
Rice ranks 5th in the NCAA in fewest personal fouls, committing just 12.6 fouls per contest.
A Look Ahead
The Owls will play their final home game of the the 2019 calendar year on Dec. 15 when they host Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m.
