TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Battling rain and temperatures in the low 30s, Rice's Grace Forbes capped off a stellar freshman campaign with an 87th place finish (21:10) out of 252 runners at Saturday's NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Forbes, from Wallingford, Pa., saved her best for last by moving up 38 spots in the final 2000m with a 7:07 split in the 6000m race. She finished with the 10th-fastest time by a freshman in the race.
"Grace closed on an exceptional note," Rice cross country head coach Jim Bevan said. "She raced like a veteran moving up from 138th at the 2k to 125 at the 4k and then passed 38 people over the last 2k to finish 87th in the nation. She has improved tremendously in the past year, having been 24th in the state of Pennsylvania a year ago. It's been a meteoric rise and I'm so glad we're able to be a part of it. Conditions were a little muddy and soft, so times were not the best, but Grace's effort was outstanding. I'm so happy she is gaining experience for the future."
Forbes had qualified for the NCAA's by taking the first individual spot not associated with either of the top two qualifying teams at the NCAA South Central Regional, earning all-region honors with a sixth place finish.
She joined Marissa Daniels (2004) as the only Owls to ever qualify for the NCAA Championships as freshmen. Forbes received Freshman of the Meet honors following her fourth place finish at the Conference USA Championships.
