FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Rice Owls cross country teams will begin NCAA Championship competition at the South Central Regional, hosted by Arkansas, on Friday morning.
Arkansas' Agri Park will host this year's event. The women's 6k begins at 11 a.m., while the men's 10k begins at 12 p.m. The top two teams and the first four finishers in the race not associated with those two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, held Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
For a third straight year the Rice Owls men's cross country team placed third at the Conference USA Championships last time out, collecting 89 points Saturday at Kereiakes Park (hosted by WKU).
The Owls had four runners earn all-conference honors and were led by junior Hociel Landa, who placed ninth overall in the 8k race with a time of 24:23 to earn second team accolades. Junior Alex Topini (16th-24:50), freshman Ace Castillo (20th-25:03) and sophomore Andrew Abikhaled (21st-25:06) all earned Third Team honors for the Owls. Just missing all-conference recognition was senior Adolfo Carvalho (23rd-25:14) and junior Matthew Murray (26th-25:22).
Last season the men finished fourth at the NCAA South Central Regional, the team's highest finish since 2004.
The Rice Owls women's cross country team placed fourth overall two weeks ago at the Conference USA Championships. Rice was led by freshman Grace Forbes, who placed fifth overall (17:09) and took home Freshman of the Meet honors. Forbes shared All-Conference USA honors with senior Khayla Patel, who placed 10th overall with a time of 17:36 to earn a spot on the second team.
Junior Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi just missed out on All-CUSA accolades, finishing 23rd (18:22) while sophomore Alyssa Balandran was 26th overall (18:23).
Last year Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi earned her first career NCAA Championship berth by placing 10th overall at the CAA South Central Regional Championship 6k race.
