The Lede
Rice was held to just 48 yards in the second half as UAB turned a one-point halftime lead into a 35-20 victory in a game that saw two lightning delays, Saturday night at Legion Field.
The Story
On the second play of the game, Aston Walter went 64 yards to give Rice a 7-0 lead. UAB took a 14-7 lead, scoring on a pair of receptions. Rice then drove 75 yards in 10 plays, capped off by Wiley Green's touchdown pass to Brad Rozner. However, on UAB's next possession, they scored on the first play, connecting on a 57-yard pass. Rice came right back, this time driving 75 yards in eight plays, as Green hit August Pitre III for a three-yard score. Chris Barnes' point after was blocked and Rice headed into halftime trailing 21-20. It would be over an hour before the teams would return to the field, as lightning delayed the game. Once the game restarted, the rain started to come down. But Rice couldn't get anything going as UAB scored 14 straight in the third quarter to put the game away.
100 x 2
Aston Walter rushed 16 times for 102 yards and Austin Trammell caught five passes for 113 yards. It is the first time that Rice has had some run for 100 yards and receive 100 yards in the same game since Samuel Stewart ran for 116 yards and Temi Alaka had 143 receiving yards against Prairie View A&M on Oct. 22, 2016.
Next Up
Rice will have the week off next week before traveling to San Antonio to face UTSA on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. The game will be livestreamed by ESPN3.
