MXC: Owls Place 10th at Chile Pepper Festival
10/5/2019 12:21:00 PM | Men's Cross Country
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Hociel Landa finished 37th among collegiate competitors out of 304 runners to pace the Rice Owls men's cross country team at the 31st annual Chile Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Landa completed the 8k race with a time of 24:48 to help the Owls finish 10th in the 32-team field. The Owls were one of 79 teams in total that competed at Agri Park as the talented field was split into two heats.
"This field was incredibly talented," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "In addition to some of the top D1 teams in the NCAA, it had the NAIA national champions, the D2 national champions, a D2 top-three finisher and many other top teams. Given all that, this group did really well. Hociel led the team with a top, fast performance. Ace improved greatly from the Rice Invite and all the others had good efforts and results as well. This was a good way to end the base part of the year and I'm looking forward to the A&M meet in a couple weeks."
Rice recorded a team total of 318 points, finishing behind Texas (74), Colorado Mines (96), Oklahoma State (125), Western Colorado (134), Arkansas (165), Oklahoma City (209), NW Missouri State (228), Lamar (239) and Cloud County CC (260). The Owls defeated 22 teams at the meet, including Arkansas State, UT-Arlington, North Texas, Baylor, Texas State and Oklahoma.
In addition to Landa's performance, Rice was paced by Alex Topini (55th-25:08), Ace Castillo (62nd-25:12, Andrew Abikhaled (73rd-25:22), Travis Dowd (91st-25:34), Adolfo Carvalho (102nd-25:41) and Matthew Murray (118th-25:53).
The Owls will return to action on Oct. 19 when they travel to College Station for Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational, followed by the Conference USA Championships on Nov. 2 in Bowling Green, Ky.
