Landa leads way placing 19th
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Hociel Landa finished 19th out of 226 runners on Saturday to pace the Rice Owls men's cross country team at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational, the team's final tune-up before the C-USA Championships on Nov. 2.
Landa completed the 8k race with a time of 24:15 to help the Owls finish ninth in the 26-team field. The Owls' five-man group averaged 2:04.22 (1k) per runner.
Rice recorded a team total of 254 points, finishing behind Middle Tennessee (41), Texas A&M (165), Cal Baptist (172), Florida (193), Tennessee (217), Arizona St. (237), Pittsburgh (237), and Idaho St. (242). The Owls defeated 17 teams at the meet, including Texas Tech, UT-Arlington, LSU, North Texas, Texas St., and Stephen F. Austin.
In addition to Landa's performance, Rice was paced by Alex Topini (32nd-24:34), Ace Castillo (56th-25:01), Adolfo Carvalho (72nd-25:15), Andrew Abikhaled (75th-25:16), Connor Meaux (103rd-25:35), and Jason Bugg (114th- 25:50).
"This was a solid effort for the last race before conference," Rice head coach Jon Warren said. "The meet was filled with good teams from all over the country, many from power five conferences. Hociel (Landa) ran fast and was able to mix in with some of the best around. We also had very good runs by Alex (Topini) and Ace (Castillo). This was a good step forward and we're excited for the two championship meets that lie ahead."
The Owls will now prepare for the Conference USA Championships, which will take place on Nov. 2 in Bowling Green, Ky.
