Grace Forbes finishes third individually
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Freshman Grace Forbes finished third out of 204 competitors on Saturday to pace the Rice Owls women's cross country team at Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational, the team's final tune-up before the C-USA Championships on Nov. 2.
Forbes, in her first collegiate race of her career, completed the 6k race with a time of 20:26 to help the Owls finish third overall in the 26-team field.
Rice recorded a team total of 157 points, finishing behind only Utah Valley (105 points) and Wyoming (148 points). The Owls defeated 23 teams at the meet, including San Jose St. (No. 12 West Region), Montana (No. 14 Mountain Region) and Houston (No. 4 South Central Region).
In addition to Forbe's performance, Rice was paced by Khayla Patel (15th-20:44), Alyssa Balandran (38th-21:19), Rachel Shoemaker (43rd-21:30), Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (58th-21:42), Ashley Messineo (68th-21:47), Mary Claire Neal (110th-22:18), and Loren Goddard (UNA-22:25).
"Our team became much better today," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We scored 15 points less than last year and Grace Forbes had such a tremendous debut in a Rice uniform. It was the best debut in my memory of a Rice freshman. Overall we competed exceptionally well and finished high in a very good field. Khayla, Rachel, Ashley and Loren had their best race ever as an Owl and we continue to improve. I was proud of Lourdes as she works her way back to 100 percent. We continue to nurse a few ladies back to complete health, but we are improving week by week and looking forward to conference."
The Owls will now prepare for the Conference USA Championships, which will take place on Nov. 2 in Bowling Green, Ky.
