Rice Falls to UTSA, 31-27

Rice was driving for the go-ahead touchdown, but Tom Stewart fumbled with seven seconds remaining and Rice fell to UTSA, 31-27, Saturday night in the Alamodome.
The Story
Rice grabbed an early lead as Chris Barnes connected on a 31-yard field goal on its opening possession. UTSA took the lead with a touchdown late in the first half. But Wiley Green hit August Pitre III for a two-yard score to give the Owls a 10-7 halftime lead. Green's pass of the second half was intercepted and returned for a touchdown, but Rice came right back as Tom Stewart hit Brad Rozner for a 19-yard score. After a UTSA field goal, Aston Walter scored on a one-yard run to give Rice an eight-point lead. However, UTSA drove 75 yards for a score and connected on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 24. Barnes gave the Owls the lead, tying his career long with a 37-yard field goal. But, the Roadrunners went right down the field and scored on an eight-yard pass. Rice then drove to the UTSA 24-yard line, but could not get any closer.

Aston Walter rushed 18 times for 109 yards and Brad Rozner caught nine passes for 138 yards. It is the second straight game that Rice has had a player run for 100 yards and receive 100 yards in the same game. Walter ran for 116 yards and Austin Trammell had 113 receiving yards against UAB.

Walter rushed for 100 yards for the third straight game, becoming the first player to rush for 100 yards in three straight games since Charles Ross did it in four straight in 2013. The 138 receiving yards give Rozner his third 100-yard receiving game of the year, becoming the first player with three 100-yard games since Jordan Taylor in 2014.
Next Up
Rice will return home for two straight games, beginning next Saturday, Oct. 26, against Southern Miss at 12 p.m. The game will be livestreamed by ESPN+.
