THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team is back home at Holloway Field for a pair of Conference USA league games this weekend. The Owls host Marshall on Friday (Oct. 18) at 7 pm followed by Western Kentucky on Sunday (Oct. 20) at 1 pm.
FUN & GAMES AT HOLLOWAY FIELD: Check out some of the extra activities scheduled for Holloway Field this weekend!
QUICK ON THE OWLS: Rice is 6-4-2 overall but a closer look at the team's schedule is in order. The team's four losses have been to Alabama, Oregon State, South Florida and SMU – who entered this weekend with a combined record of 33-13-5. Rice had a gritty performance to begin C-USA action with a 1-0 victory over Charlotte. The Owls picked up four points in a pair of C-USA road games (Sept. 26-29) by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to tie Middle Tennessee 2-2, then turning right around and winning at UTSA 1-0. The Blue & Gray again used late heroics to defeat UAB at home 1-0. Last weekend the Owls picked up another C-USA road point with a draw at LA Tech.
STANDINGS WATCH: The Owls are unbeaten in C-USA league play (3-0-2) at the midpoint of the conference schedule. The Blue & Gray has 11 points in C-USA matches to hold sole possession of fifth place in the league standings, four points back of first place Charlotte (5-1-0, 15 points).
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters this week's game with a career record of 293-192-57. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program.
SERIES HISTORY VS. MARSHALL: Rice leads the soccer series with the Thundering Herd 5-4-1. A year ago the Owls secured a 2-1 win in West Virginia. Due to a quirk in the C-USA schedule Friday's match is the first time the C-USA foes will meet in Houston since 2013. That year the Herd tallied a 3-1 win over Rice in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament held at Holloway Field.
SERIES HISTORY VS. WKU: Rice leads the all-time series with Western Kentucky 4-1-2. Sunday's match is the Hilltoppers' first visit to Houston since 2016. The very first meeting between the teams was in 2011, a thrilling 3-2 Owl victory at home in double-overtime.
DID YOU KNOW: Both Rice & Western Kentucky started their respective soccer programs for the first time beginning with the 2001 season.
NEXT WEEK: After Sunday's home game the Owls are back out on the road next weekend for a crucial pair of C-USA matches. Rice plays at FIU Friday (Oct. 25) followed by a road game at FAU on Oct. 27 (Sun.).
