Rice Remains Unbeaten In C-USA League Play
HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team rallied for two second half goals, including the game-winner in the 86th minute, to defeat visiting Conference USA foe Marshall 2-1 Friday evening at Holloway Field in Houston.
C-USA Climbers
The Owls remained unbeaten in C-USA league play (4-0-2) and picked up another three points in the conference standings. The Blue & Gray now has 14 points in C-USA matches to hold sole possession of third place, four points back of first place Charlotte (6-1-0, 18 points). Rice improved to 7-4-2 overall. Marshall is now 4-11-0 on the season and 2-5-0 in conference.
Rice Goals
Trailing 1-0 to start the second half, senior forward Haley Kostyshyn tied the score with her fifth goal of the season in the game's 47th minute. The teams were deadlocked until the game's closing minutes. Finally, in the 86th minute, Lianne Mananquil blasted away at a shot attempt from a tricky angle on the right wing. Marshall was able to deflect the shot away, but true freshman Izzy McBride opportunistically played the carom from inside the six to the back of the net on the right side. The score was McBride's second goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of her collegiate career.
Don't Leave Early!
A trend is developing. For the fourth time in the last six matches Rice has come up with the game-winning goal in the final minutes of regulation. Since the start of C-USA action the Owls have scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute against Charlotte, the 89th minute against UTSA, the 87th against UAB and now the 86th minute against Marshall.
