Owls Remain Unbeaten In C-USA Action
HOUSTON – Rice sophomore midfielder Delaney Schultz converted on a penalty kick in the 64th minute to lift the Rice soccer team to a 1-0 Conference USA victory over visiting Western Kentucky Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field in Houston.
Only Unbeaten Team In C-USA
Rice remained unbeaten in C-USA matches (5-0-2) and earned another three points in the league standings. The Owls now have 17 points in C-USA games to hold sole possession of third place overall, a single point behind co-leaders North Texas and Charlotte (both 6-1-0, 18 points). Rice improved to 8-4-2 for the full season. Western Kentucky is now 8-6-1 overall and in fifth place in the conference with a 4-4-0 ledger (12 points).
Lone Goal
The teams were deadlocked at 0-0 for almost the first two-thirds of the contest. In the game's 64th minute Western Kentucky fouled Rice senior Lianne Mananquil inside the 18, setting up an Owl penalty kick. Schultz confidently stepped forward and blasted the ball to the back of the WKU net for what proved to be the lone goal of the contest. The score was Schultz' fourth goal of the year on one of her two shots against the Hilltoppers.
PK Redemption
Rice converted on the penalty kick Sunday to get back on track for missing a PK on Friday vs. Marshall (a match which the Owls went on win 2-1). This year Rice is 5-of-6 on penalty kick attempts, with Schultz a perfect 2-for-2.
Sixth Clean Slate
The Owl goalkeeping tandem of sophomore Bella Killgore and senior Maya Hoyer split Sunday's playing time for the first and second halves, respectively. The duo both recorded three saves in the contest and combined for the team's sixth shutout of the season. Western Kentucky had one final heart-stopping attempt to get on the board on the very last second of play, but the Hilltopper header inside the six was just high.
Taking Shots
The Blue & Gray finished the day with 16 shots. Senior Louise Stephens paced the Rice attack with four shot attempts, and one of the most dramatic of the afternoon was junior defender Mijke Roelfsema hitting the crossbar in the 28th minute. Credit to WKU keeper Anne-Marie Ulliac for making six saves on the day.
