Surging Owls Return to Tudor Fieldhouse
Winners of four straight and 11 of their last 12 games, the Rice Owls make their long-awaited return to the home court this weekend to kickoff a three-game homestand after playing their previous five games on the road. Over that stretch the Owls went 4-1, including a 2-0 performance to start the C-USA campaign. This weekend the Owls host both UTSA (Thursday) and UTEP (Saturday), which begins a stretch of five of their next seven contests at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Roadrunners hold an 11-8 series edge over the Owls while Rice leads the all-time series over the Miners, 27-17.
Last Time Out
The Owls used a balanced scoring attack and lockdown defense to win their fourth straight game, defeating Louisiana Tech on the road 61-51 last Saturday afternoon at Thomas Assembly Center. Rice completed an impressive weekend road sweep of their first two C-USA contests of the season by holding the Lady Techsters (8-7, 0-2) to 35 percent shooting, including a 1-of-14 effort from three-point territory. Offensively the Owls placed three players in double-figures, led by 17 points from junior guard Erica Ogwumike, who made 8-of13 field goal attempts while also collecting seven rebounds.
UTSA Scouting Report
The Roadrunners dropped their C-USA opener against UTEP last weekend, 73-60, and are 0-3 on the road so far this season. Junior forward Marie Benson is UTSA's leading scorer (16.8 ppg) and leads all of C-USA in double-doubles (7), blocked shots (24), blocked shots per game (1.85), offensive rebounds per game (4.0), rebounds (148), and rebounds per game (11.4).
UTEP Scouting Report
The Miners picked up a victory in their C-USA opener at UTSA for their first road win of the season. UTEP commits the fewest fouls (14.4) in C-USA per game and ranks second in assists per game (15.8). Zuzanna Puc leads the Miners in scoring (12.9 ppg) and field goal percentage (53.7).
Home Sweet Home
Rice has started the season 5-0 at Tudor Fieldhouse and has won seven straight games at home dating back to last season. Over the last three seasons under head coach Tina Langley the Owls have a 32-6 record at Tudor Fieldhouse, which includes 16 straight win over non-conference opponents.
Iademarco Shooting for History
Senior guard Nicole Iademarco enters play on Thursday with 162 career made three-pointers and trails only Maya Hawkins (164 three-pointers) for the Rice all-time lead in made trifectas. In addition, Iademarco is 45 points shy of 1,000 career point in her Rice career.
Ogwumike Boasting Career Season
Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike, the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year, has scored in double-figures in 11 of 13 games and has six double-doubles on the year. Ogwumike is averaging a double-double (17.1 points/10.7 rebounds) for the season while shooting 44% from the field, 31% from three-point territory, and 83% at the FT line. She ranks top-30 in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7th-9.0), free throws made (26th-66) and rebounds per game (27th-10.7).
Mulkey's Block Party
Redshirt sophomore Nancy Mulkey is making an immediate impact for the Owls, especially on the defensive end. Mulkey ranks second in C-USA with 21 total blocks in just her first six games and her average of 3.5 blocks per game would rank second in the nation if she qualified (players must play in 75% of their team's games).
