Iademarco Helps Guide Owls to 5th Straight Win

Rice dominates UTSA in 85-54 victory
HOUSTON – Rice senior guard Nicole Iademarco totaled a season-high 23 points to help lead the Owls to their fifth straight victory and 12th win in their last 13 games with a wire-to-wire 85-54 home triumph over UTSA Thursday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Iademarco grabbed a piece of history at the 8:28 mark of the second quarter, etching her name into the Rice record books by knocking down her 165th career three-pointer to surpass former teammate Maya Hawkins for the most made three-pointers in program history. Iademarco connected on a season-high nine field goals on 13 attempts, including a 4-of-5 effort from beyond the arc.
Also joining Iademarco in double-figures was junior Erica Ogwumike, who picked up her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 13 points along with a game-high 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes. Lauren Grigsby and Jasmine Smith also chipped in 10 points apiece in the Owls balanced scoring attack.
Rice (12-3, 3-0) improved to 6-0 at home this season by winning the points in the paint battle (48-22) and shot over 50 percent from the field for a fourth straight game with a 54.1 percent rate.
"It was so good to be back home," Rice head coach Tina Langley said. "This community is incredible for our program and really gives us a home court advantage. I thought we had a really solid team win tonight; did a great job on both ends of the floor and I thought we grew as a team. I could not be more proud of Nicole. She came here to help revitalize and rebuild our program and has been so selfless these past couple of years. I'm proud that she's in the record books because she's earned it."
The Owls never trailed in the contest and led by as much as 37 points at the end of the third quarter. Rice also matched their season-high with 19 team assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
The Owls registered a season-high 28 points in the opening quarter with some sizzling shooting from the outside, making five three-pointers on nine attempts, two of which came from Iademarco. The Woodlands, Texas native scored 10 points in the quarter, making 4-of-6 shots from the field along with three assists and two steals. Defensively Rice held UTSA to 35 percent shooting and forced seven turnovers, which the Owls converted into nine points and led 28-15 at quarter's end.
Quarter 2
Rice kept the pressure on the Roadrunners by outscoring UTSA 20-7 in the period. The Owls' suffocating defense limited UTSA to just 18 percent shooting (3-of-17). Rice entered the locker room with a 48-22 advantage.
Quarter 3
The Owls doubled up the Roadrunners in the third, 22-11, making 10-of-16 shots from the field and their ballooned to 70-33 after Rice converted a three-point play at the end of the quarter.
Quarter 4.
Rice cruised in the final 10 minutes and freshman Arianna McCurry scored her first collegiate points with a three-point play the old fashioned way.
