Rice Wins Sixth-Straight To Improve To 13-3
With a 9-0 run from the opening tip Rice controlled the tempo throughout the contest and seemed to attack UTEP from a myriad of spots. Five Owls, Nicole Iademarco (15 points), Erica Ogwumike (13 pts.), Haylee Swayze (12 pts.), and Nancy Mulkey & Jasmine Smith (both 11 pts.) all reached double-digits in a true team-win.
Overall Rice was a combined 27-of-54 from the floor and a steady 12-of-26 (46.2) from three-point range. Almost lost in the offensive fireworks was the Blue & Gray also out-rebounded the Miners 31-17 on the defensive end 26-6.
Rice improved to 13-3 overall and remained unbeaten in C-USA league play with a 4-0 ledger. Owl head coach Tina Langley, now in her fourth season at the helm of the program, has stated all along what teams are capable of when working together.
"I'm happy to get a conference win and it was great to get it this way, a real team-victory with so many players all contributing," Coach Langley said. "I was happy with our team focus and intensity, and I love to see the way we're continuing to improve. UTEP is a great rebounding team and today I was happy with the job we did on the boards. There's still a lot of games left, so we're going to continue to work."
The Owls next host North Texas on Saturday (Jan. 19) to close out the current homestand. Start time against the Mean Green is slated for 2 pm at Tudor Fieldhouse. For more information, be sure to visit www.RiceOwls.com and follow @RiceWBB on Twitter.
