Owls Race Past Bearkats

The Lead: The Rice women's tennis team picked up its second win of the 2019 dual season by racing to a 6-1 win over Sam Houston State on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Sunday's match was held in combination with the men's match vs. UTRGV, the first of two combined home duals for the squads, in addition to a combined road dual next weekend at LSU.
Doubles: The Owls raced out to the early lead, grabbing the doubles point thanks to wins of 6-2 and 6-1 at the second and third lines to stay unbeaten in doubles this season. Victoria Smirnova and Anna Bowtell improved to 3-0 on the year.
Singles: Linda Huang provided the Owls second point of the day with a straight set win at the third position and was followed by Anna Bowtell and Priya Niezgoda to provide the clinching points. Smirnova needed a first set tiebreaker as well as a super set tiebreaker to pick up a win at the second spot in the lineup while Michaela Haet wrapped up the scoring with a three-set win at the first line.
Next Up: The Rice men and women will travel to Baton Rouge next weekend for a combined noon dual next Sunday.
