LSU Blanks Owls
2/3/2019 2:44:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Lead: The Rice women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to 18th ranked LSU on Sunday at the LSU Tennis Complex. The Owls fell to 2-2 on the season, while LSU improved to 5-0.
Doubles: Each of the Tigers doubles teams opened the dual season in the national rankings and LSU ook the early advantage with a 6-2 win at the first line, but Anastasia Smirnova and Priya Niezgoda evened things with a 6-4 win at court two with a win over LSU's 54th ranked tandem of Anna Loughlan and Kennan Johnson. The Tigers clinched the point with a 6-4 win on court three.
Singles: LSU stayed hot in singles, taking five of six first sets in singles and sending the sixth match to three sets. Rice rallied to send two of those five matches to third sets, but the Tigers rebounded to close out the match.
Elizabeth Schmidt: Obviously, we lost 7-0, but there were matches we were in but we didn't have the identity or the attitude that we needed to beat this LSU team today. They came in with a little bit more of a spring in their step and a little more of a 'I'm going to go get this' attitude than we did. This is a young team and we're learning who we are. I know this team and myself and want us to be a different team come tomorrow than then what we were today. The best way to grow and improve is to put it out there and compete and I'm excited that we're getting back on the court on Wednesday against TCU and to be better in some of the things that frankly we weren't very good in today.
Up Next: Rice will host TCU at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
