Helmers leads the Owls with seventh place finish
ST. PAUL, MN - The Rice Owls women's cross country team placed four runners in the top 50 of Saturday's Roy Griak Invitational (Minnesota) at the Les Bolstad Golf Course to place eighth overall in the 14-team 6k race.
Rice freshman Ryann Helmers was the Owls top individual finisher, and the top freshman performer in the entire race, placing seventh overall (sixth collegiately) in a time of 21:38 with a split of 11:06. Sophomore Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi also finished in the top 20, finishing 19th overall (18 points) in a time of 22:03 while junior Khayla Patel earned 38 points in a time of 22:30 with a 43rd place result. The Owls top five was rounded out by freshmen Ashley Messineo (46 points-22:42) and Alyssa Balandran (76 points-23:45). Mary Claire Neal (23:50), Ruby Watson (24:16), Natalie Goddard (24:17), Maddie Forbes (24:43), and Loren Goddard (24:51) also saw action for the Owls.
Running unattached, Elsa Racasan represented the Owls with a stellar sixth place finish in a time of 21:38.
"We came up here to run a 6k race on a tough course and it was good for us," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "This will help our team in the future. It was probably the best race for a Rice freshman in a long time. Ryann was the top freshman in the whole race and her time on this course was very impressive. We ran very well through the top four. Ashley Messineo improved over her performance from last week. Our performance on this course was better than our effort the last time we were here (2006) with a young team (0 seniors, 1 junior, 3 sophomores, 6 freshmen). We are looking forward to closing our gap as the season progresses."
Host Minnesota (52 points) took home the title, followed by Cal Baptist (2nd-82 points) and South Dakota (3rd-106 points).
The Owls will next send a handful of runners to compete at the HBU Invitational, which takes place next Thursday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
