Three runners place in top-25
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - In their final meet before the Conference USA Championship, the Rice Owls women's cross country team turned in a superb performance by finishing second overall at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
Rice placed three runners in the top-25, led by a seventh place finish by sophomore Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (20:23) in the 6k race. Ryann Helmers continued her strong freshman campaign, placing 17th overall (20:47) while junior Khayla Patel placed 22nd (20:58). Freshman Ashley Messineo rounded out the five Owls who scored with a 44th place result, crossing the finish line in 21:21.
Mary Claire Neal (22:00) and Alyssa Balandran (22:06) also competed in the morning race. Rice also had five more runners participate in the afternoon open race, led by a 15th place finish from Sara Ivackovic (22:20).
"Our young ladies took a big step forward today," Rice women's cross country head coach Jim Bevan said. "We competed very well, finishing second in a big field. Lourdes had her best race in her life, and Khayla and Ashley stepped up big time. Mary Claire ran fifth for the first time in her career with a big personal best and Alyssa also had a personal best. In the open race we ran as a team and finished fifth. I'm very proud of Sara, coming back from injury and Caitlin competed extremely well in her first race as an Owl. We are coming home with a lot of momentum and confidence as the season progresses we are definitely improving. We're looking forward to our conference meet."
The Owls will look to win a C-USA title on Oct. 27 when they race at 7:30 a.m. (CT) from Boca Raton, Fla.
