Second Half Surge Fall Short
11/3/2018 7:25:00 PM | Football
The Lead:
Wiley Green threw for a career-high 313 yards and led a second-half rally that put Rice in position to fashion yet another memorable Homecoming afternoon, but UTEP hung on for a 34-26 win at Rice Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Details:
UTEP scored on its first drive of the day and scored the game's first 27 points before the Owls jumped on the scoreboard on the final play of the first half on a 43-yard Haden Tobola field goal. The Miners extended the lead to 34-3 after recovering a fumbled punt at the Rice 25. Rice responded with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive of its own that was highlighted by a 47-yard completion from Green to Austin Walter. Green threw for 240 yards in the second half, including 153 in the final quarter. He threw a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to Austin Trammell, first for 20 yards and then finding him for a 53-yarder after scrambling to his right. Green converted two-point conversions to Aaron Cephus on each of the final two touchdowns, but while the Owls held UTEP to 100 yards in the second half they could not close the gap further in the final eight minutes.
The Notes:
- Green was 17-for-32 for a career-high 313 yards and two touchdowns.

- With two 50-yard punts, P/K Jack Fox has 21 punts of at least 50 yards. It is also his 14th straight game with a 50-yard punt.
