Poor First Half Shooting Dooms Rice at Wichita State
11/25/2018 4:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WICHITA, Kan. — Rice could not overcome poor shooting and turnovers in the first half as it fell to Wichita State, 90-61, Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"(Wichita State) came out throwing haymakers, trying to knock us out and they did that. In the first half, we got too far behind. I'm really proud of the guys for how they responded in the second half and how hard we fought. I thought we got a lot of really good shots that guys have been making. Maybe we could have got it down to 13 or 12 (points) and made it a game. But, it just wasn't meant to be. They are a very good team and very well-coached."
The Story
After scoring on its initial possession, the Owls turned the ball over on their next 10 possessions, during which Wichita State went on a 16-0 run. Chris Mullins broke the run with back-to-back threes, but the Shockers answered with a 20-2 run as Rice missed seven straight shots. Rice was able to get within 21, but the Shockers scored six of the final eight points in the half to lead 49-24 at the break. The teams battled back-and-forth to start the second half, as Rice made nine of its first 13 shots. The Owls were able to get the deficit under 20 points, but could get no closer.

Jack Williams had 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Chris Mullins had 12 points and Robert Martin added 10.
