Series Notes
• This is the third meeting between the two schools, with ODU having won both of the previous two.
• Both of the previous meetings have come down to the final moments to decide the outcome.
• ODU won the initial meeting, which was also the Monarchs C-USA debut, 45-42 in 2014 as ODU's Ricky Seagers kicked a 25-yard field goal as time ran out.
• The win snapped a nine-game home winning streak for the Owls and a six-game C-USA winning streak.
• Rice rallied from a 35-14 deficit as Driphus Jackson returned to the game after suffering a shoulder injury and engineered scoring marches of 75, 65, 75 and 80 yards on the Owls last four possessions in the second half.
• Darik Dillard's 7-yard run with 1:05 left in the game allowed Owls to tie the game at 42-42.
• Last season, ODU scored with 37 seconds left to spoil a Rice comeback and win 24-21.
• The Monarchs carried a 17-7 lead ino the fourth quarter, but a Nahshon Ellerbe touchdown with 11:45 left cut the margin to 17-14. Rice took the lead with 2:05 left in the game on a three-yard run by Miklo Smalls that was set up by a 51-yard run by Austin Walter.
• Ellerbe rushed for 69 yards and Walter added 66 to lead the Owls.
Senior Day
Rice will salute 20 seniors prior to Saturday's game. The 20 individuals include players who will participate in the game as well as those whose playing careers were cut short by injury but continued to contribute to the program in off-field roles: Lawrence Cimino, Jorian Clark, Josh Cummings, Brandon Douglas-Dotson, Jack Fox, Giovani Gentosi, Parker Hanusa, Cameron Johnson, Trevor Long, Clayton Malcomb, Andrew Mike, Martin Nwakamma, Sam Pierce, Graysen Schantz, Shawn Stankavage, Samuel Stewart, Carl Thompson, Haden Tobola, Austin Walter and Brady Wright.
Walking Out With a Win
Rice has closed out nine of the last ten home schedules with a win, sending the respective senior classes out with a win in their last home games at Rice Stadium. The Owls won nine consecutive home finales from 2008-2016 before North Texas defeated Rice 30-14 on Senior Day in 2017.
Finishing Strong
Haden Tobola is closing out his Rice career in style. He has converted his last eight field goal attempts this year and his 90.9 success rate (10/11) leads C-USA, is fourth in the nation and would set a Rice season record. The current record is 88.9 by Derek Crabtree in 1999. Tobola's 10 field goals are a career-high and he needs one to move into the Owls' season top ten. He has made 26 of 36 in his career to rank sixth in school history, one shy of Crabtree, who kicked 27 from 1998-01 and two away from matching Clark Fangmeier (2006-09) for fourth.
