NORFOLK, Va. — On the eve of competing at the annual Conference USA Soccer Championship, Rice junior Lianne Mananquil's selection as the C-USA Midfielder of the Year led a host of Owl award-winners announced by the conference office on Tuesday (Oct. 30).
The 2018 C-USA soccer awards were determined by a vote of the league's 14 head coaches. In addition to Mananquil's selection as Midfielder of the Year and as a First Team all-conference honoree, senior Annie Walker was named to the C-USA Second Team. Junior midfielder Erin Mikeska was named to the C-USA Third Team and Delaney Schultz was named to the league's 11-player All-Freshman squad.
Mananquil is a crafty, tempo-setting midfielder who has often been the catalyst behind the Rice offense. The junior Jacksonville, Fla., native led C-USA with ten assists while also scoring a pair of goals on her own, including the game-winner last Sunday at Charlotte that sent the Owls into conference postseason play. Walker shares the team lead with four goals, three of which were against C-USA foes. She ranks second on the team with 39 shots, and 16 have been on-goal for a .410 shots-on-goal percentage.
Miskeka has been a starter in every game in which she has played. The standout from Austin is fourth on the team in minutes with a .467 shots-on-goal percentage despite being sidelined for two full games. Schultz meanwhile may be a rookie, but she is the only Owl to play every minute on the field without subbing-out of a game. The Saint Louis, Mo., native has scored two goals while splitting time between the backline and the midfield. Rice's four all-conference honorees trained under the direction of head coach Nicky Adams.
The Rice soccer team is next in action against league foe North Texas on Wednesday in the opening round of the C-USA Championship. Start time against the Mean Green is set for 3:30 pm (Central Time) at ODU Soccer Complex in Norfolk, Va.
The league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is on the line at the week-long, eight-team, single-elimination event. The tournament's championship final is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 12 noon (Central Time), and slated for a live broadcast by ESPN3.
