Series Notes
• This is the ninth meeting between the two schools (4-4) and the sixth as members of C-USA (UNT leads 3-2).
• The series began with a non-conference meeting in 1988 when the Mean Green, who were headed to the 1-AA playoffs, stormed to a 33-3 lead and won 33-17 on Senior Day. The game was also Jerry Berndt's last home game as the Owls' head coach.
• Rice's first win over the Mean Green came in 2008 as the Owls scored their most points in a game in the modern era, winning 77-20. Chase Clement and Jarett Dillard etched their names into the NCAA record book, becoming the most productive duo in NCAA history by connecting on three touchdown passes to raise their career total to 41. They went on to finish their careers combining on 52 (51 when Clement threw to Dillard, one when the roles were reversed).
• Dillard caught three TD passes from Clement and one from running back Jeremy Goodson to set a school record with four on the day.
• Rice holds a 2-1 lead in games played in Denton, winning the initial meeting 33-32 at Fouts Field in 2010 and splitting two games at Apogee Stadium.
• North Texas won the first game at Apogee, 28-16 in 2013 in what would be the Owls final loss in the regular season. Following the Thursday night defeat, Rice won out to capture the C-USA West and go on to beat Marshall for the C-USA title.
• Rice won the last meeting in Denton, 38-24 in 2015.
Youthful Look to the Lineup
True freshmen Cole Garcia and Clay Servin lined up next to each other on the left side of the Owls offensive line as starters against FIU, becoming the sixth and seventh true freshmen to start for the Owls this year. The Owls are the only team in the country to have started three true freshmen on the offensive line this year. Rice's starting lineup featured a total of five true freshmen (Prudy Calderon, Treshawn Chamberlain, Garcia, Antonio Montero and Servin) as well as one sophomore JuCo transfer (Blaze Alldredge) last week in addition to three redshirt freshmen (Shea Baker, Rhett Cardwell and Evan Marshman. A total of 10 true freshmen played vs. FIU.
Interior Department
The four starters along the Owls defensive front all rank among the top seven on the team in tackles through eight games. Zach Abercrumbia leads the team with 37 tackles, Elijah Garcia is fourth with 29 and Roe Wilkins and Graysen Schantz are tied for sixth with 28. Garcia and Schantz have already reached career highs for tackles while Abercrumbia has matched his and Wilkins is four tackles away. Last year, the defensive front had only two ranked in the top seven (Brian Womac and Abercrumbia).
Fox Continues to Shine
Ray Guy candidate Jack Fox leads Conference USA and has matched his career high with 17 punts of at least 50 yards and has a streak of 12 consecutive games with at least one punt of at least 50 yards. Fox is second in C-USA with a 45.5 yard average (10th in the nation) and he has increased his career average to 43.1, edging him in front of Kyle Martens' school career mark of 43.0.
