Golf in Eighth after First Round of Maui Jim

First Round Results 
Scottsdale, Ariz. -- Rice is in eighth-place after one round of the Maui Jim Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,203-yard Desert Forest Golf Club.
The Owls shot a nine-over par 297, four strokes behind LSU and Lipscomb.
"We had a pretty good grind out there today on a tough course," said head coach Justin Emil. "For a while, we had one of the best rounds going, but we gave a few away on the last six holes. We're looking forward to another shot at the course tomorrow."
Senior Mario Carmona fired an even-par 72 to sit in an 11th-place tie, including carding one of just five eagles on the day when he eagled the par-five 18th hole. It was also his second round of par or better this year and the 31st of his career.
Senior Mitchell Meissner is tied for 20th-place after carding a one-over par 73. Junior Grant Rogers is three-over par and tied for 34th-place after shooting a 75. Sophomore Nicholas Duggan is tied for 44th-place at five-over par after posting a 77.
Freshman Rishi Kejriwal shot a seven-over par 79 to sit in a 57th-place tie and freshman Jake Benson, playing as an individual, is tied for 69th-place after posting a nine-over par 81.
Kent State leads the tournament at seven-under par, eight strokes in front of Arizona State and Minnesota. Kent State's Gisli Sveinbergsson leads the individual tournament at four-under par, one stroke in front of Noah Norton of Georgia Tech.
The second round begins tomorrow with Rice teeing off at 9:55 a.m. The Owls are paired with Gonzaga and Hawaii.
