Cabo, Mexico — Freshman Trevor Brown tied his career-low round, firing a 68 to tie for 13th-place at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, played at the par-71, 6,928-yard Querencia Golf Club.
It is Brown's best finish of his career and the second top-20 finish of his career. His 54-hole score of 209 was also a career-low The 68 was his second round in the 60's and eighth round of par of better.
Rice finished in 15th-place, 36-over par after carding a final round 285.
"There were a lot of positives today, starting with a strong finish in an elite field for Trevor," said head coach Justin Emil. "He really made a statement today, finishing with a 68 and climbing four spots on the leaderboard. Mario (Carmona) got off to a bad start today going five-over through the first six holes. But, he never gave up and fought his way back to finish even par. That's really big for our team and he showed strong competitive character."
Junior Mario Carmona fired an even par 71 to tie for 54th-place at eight-over par. It is his 10th round of par or better this year and the 23rd of his career.
Senior Kevin Reilly posted an 82 to finish in 76th-place at 22-over par. Freshman Nicholas Duggan fired a one-under 70 for his third round of par of better this year to tie for 77th-place at 25-over par and junior Mitchell Meissner posted a 76 to finish in 80th-place.
Added Emil, "Nick also came through for us today. I'm really proud of how he approached today's round, regardless of his score. His perspective was different and it showed in a big way for the team. We have some work to do and I'm confident we will come back strong in Laredo after some of the things we learned about ourselves and our team."
Oklahoma State won the team competition at 29-under par, 10 strokes in front of Baylor. Washington's Corey Pereira earned medalist honors at nine-under par.
Rice returns to the links next week, Fri.-Sat., Mar. 10-11, when it travels to Laredo for the Border Olympics.
