San Antonio, Texas — Rice shot a two-under 286 to finish 19-over par in second-place at the Lone Star Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,247-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
The Owls finished six strokes back of team champion New Mexico. They were the only school to shoot under par in the final round. It is their second runner-up finish of the year and third top-three finish, the most since 2009-10.
"That was a big time round today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "The conditions steadily got tougher as the day went on and the guys ground one of if not their best round of the season. I'm really proud of them."
Sophomore Mario Carmona earned his second runner-up finish of the year behind medalist Tee-K Kelly of Ohio State. He posted a three-under par 69 to finish even-par for the tournament, one of just two rounds in the 60's during the final round. It was his team-leading ninth round of par or better this year and 11th for his career. It is also his second round in the 60's this year and the fourth of his career.
Freshman Will Voetsch earned the first top-10 finish of his career, tying for ninth-place at four-over par. Voetsch closed the tournament with a 71, his seventh round of par or better this year.
Junior Kevin Reilly tied for 26th-place at 10-over par after firing a 71. It was his seventh round of par of better this year and the 30th of his career.
Senior James Lee shot a 75 to tie for 30th-place at 11-over par while sophomore Mitchell Meissner tied for 48th-place at 15-over par after posting a 77. Sophomore Jay Burlison finished in 97th-place at 33-over par after shooting an 83.
Rice returns to the links Apr. 2-3 when it travels to Franklin, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Championship.
