Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars
HOUSTON--Rice University men's golfers Tommy Economou and James Lee were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America, the organization announced on Wednesday.
To qualify for the award, NCAA Division I student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Economou earned All-America Scholar honors for the second consecutive season. The senior finished second on the team with a 74.38 stroke average over 32 rounds in 2014-15. He led the Owls in four tournaments this year, including posting two top-20 finishes. The Hillsborough, Calif., native tied for 16th-place at the Border Olympics, while tying for 20-place at the Miramont Invitational. He also carded a career-best 68 during the second round of the UTSA Lone Star Invitational.
Lee had a stroke average of 74.69 over 32 rounds. He had his best finish at the Jim West Intercollegiate, leading the Owls with a 13th-place tie, where he also tied his career-best 69 in the first round. The Albuquerque, N.M., native also placed second four times.
In all, 206 players in Division I, 91 in Division II and 17 in NAIA earned the honor. Additionally, 34 honorees were added to the previously released Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars.
