NORMAN, Okla. - Michael Whitehead, who concluded his golf career at Rice in May, was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar on Wednesday. Whitehead becomes the 12th Rice player to be a repeat recipient of the award.
To be eligible for the recognition, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete at least two years at the collegiate level, participate in at least 70 percent of a team's competitive rounds or participate in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average lower than 76.0 and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2. According to the GCAA, a recipient must also be of high moral character and in good standing at his university.
The GCAA recognized 138 Division I student-athletes this year.
Rice University has had 19 student-athletes recognized a total of 32 times since the GCAA's All-America Scholar program begun in 1984.
Whitehead headlined the Conference USA All-Academic team and was also named C-USA's Golfer of the Year. Following a senior season in which he advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships for a second straight year, he was named a Division I PING All-Region selection as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Whitehead earned a bachelor's degree in Sport Management at Rice and since concluding his collegiate career, turned pro. Earlier this summer the Sugar Land native qualified for and played in the U.S. Open. Last week he posted a third-place finish at the 41st Chesapeake Texas State Open.
