TEXARKANA, Ark. - Rice University closed out play at the 2011 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship with a final-round 297 to finish in 10th place on Tuesday. The Owls finished with a three-round score of 898 (+34).
"Overall, it is kind of hard not to be disappointed with our finish," said head coach Drew Scott. "We had an opportunity to really make up some ground both yesterday and today and just didn't do it. It was a disappointing way to end our year."
Individually, Rice freshman Jeff Wibawa fired a final-round 69 en route to a tie for 13th in his first conference tournament while Michael Whitehead shot a 77 Tuesday to wrap up the final league championship of his career.
Wibawa eagled the second hole of his round and had three birdies over his final nine holes in the tournament played at Texarkana Country Club. The rookie finished with a three-round score of 217 (+1).
"Today's round was a nice way for Jeff to finish his freshman season," Scott said.
While Whitehead struggled at the conference tournament and finished tied for 26th with a 221 (+5), his success throughout the season will lead to postseason play. He will advance to play in the NCAA Regionals next month. He will learn May 9th which of the six regionals he will compete in.
With a shotgun start being utilized for the final round, Whitehead began the day tied for eighth and four strokes back of the lead. A nine on the next to last hole of the tournament was part of a final-round 77. He finished with a three-round score of 221 (+5) and tied for 26th in the final individual standings.
UCF shot a final round 280 (-8) to win the team title by two strokes over runner-up Memphis. Individually, Memphis' Jonathan Fly shot a final-round 69 to hold off UCF's Greg Eason and capture medalist honors with a three-round score of 209 (-7).
