SAN ANTONIO - Rice University opened the spring golf season with a 14th place finished at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational which wrapped up on Tuesday.
The Owls shot a 303 team score for the second straight round of the tournament on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 899 (+47). Michael Whitehead shot a 75 on Tuesday to finish with a 219 (+6) and post a 29th-place finish in the individual standings.
Freshman Jeff Wibawa had the Owls' top finish on Tuesday, a 73 which gave him a three-round score of 226 (+13). He tied for 54th.
Led by Nils Floren's individual championship, Texas Tech was 15-under for the tournament and won the team title by 12 strokes over second-place Oklahoma. North Texas (-2) was the only other squad in the 17-team field to play under-par golf for the 54 holes.
Floren shot a three-round 208 (-5) to win the individual championship by a stroke over Oklahoma's Ben Klaus who was playing as an individual who didn't count toward the Sooners' score.
After Tulsa's 855 (+3), which was good for fourth place, the balance of the field shot no better than +25.
"We made the turn at even par as a team," said Rice coach Drew Scott about Tuesday's round. "At the time, we had the best round of the day but we really struggled on the back nine. We missed some putts and we just didn't play very well. It was frustrating but we are excited to get back to Houston and get ready for our home tournament."
The Owls will look to put the opener behind them and get ready for next week's 11th Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon. The tournament will be played next Monday and Tuesday at Westwood Golf Club in Southwest Houston.
Scott said the focus the remainder of this week will be aimed at regaining confidence.
"Anytime you go out and play not as well as you are capable of, you are going to lose some confidence," he said. "It will be nice to get back on our home course and back into a comfort zone which comes with playing at home."
The Owls will head into next week's Rice Intercollegiate as the defending tournament champion.
