
Buttacavoli, Whitehead Named All-America Scholars

NORMAN, Okla. - Rice University golfers Michael Buttacavoli and Michael Whitehead have been named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
To be eligible for the recognition, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete at least two years at the collegiate level, participate in at least 70 percent of a team's competitive rounds or participate in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average lower than 76.0 and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2. According to the GCAA, a recipient must also be of high moral character and in good standing at his university.
The GCAA recognized 119 Division I student-athletes this year.
Rice University has now had 19 student-athletes recognized a total of 31 times since the GCAA's All-America Scholar program was begun in 1984. This year marks the 10th time that Rice has had multiple selections.
Buttacavoli, who earlier this summer was named an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA At Large Third-Team All-America, was recognized for the second straight year as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.
As a senior, Buttacavoli led Rice with seven, Top 10 finishes during the year. He had a 73.74 strokes per round average.
Buttacavoli was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team and headlined the league's All-Academic Team.
Whitehead led Rice with a 73.47 strokes per round average during his junior year. He had nine, Top 20 finishes including four, Top 5s which also led the squad.
Buttacavoli and Whitehead helped lead Rice to its best finish at a conference tournament since the 1930s and the school's first appearance in the NCAA Championships in 13 years. The Owls won two tournaments and were the runners-up at three other events during the 2009-10 season.
