Michael Whitehead, who will be a senior on the Rice golf team this fall, won the U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament played at The Woodlands Country Club this week and will advance to next month's national championship.
Whitehead shot a two-under par 70 on Wednesday and finished with a two-round score of 137 (-7) to win the tournament by one stroke over Texas A&M's Andrea Pavan. Herbert Day, Matthew Stephens and Tyler Sheppard tied for third with three-under par 141s.
All five qualified for the U.S. Amateur which will be competed Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
Whitehead, who helped lead Rice to its first NCAA Regional appearance in 13 years this past spring, had a one-stroke, first-round lead after carding a bogey-free 67 on Tuesday. After his first tee shot went out of bounds Wednesday and he settled for a double bogey on his first hole, the Sugar Land native was four-under par for the rest of the round en route to qualifying for his first U.S. Amateur.
This is the second straight year a Rice golfer has qualified for the nation's most prestigious amateur tournament. Robert Burrow, who will also be a senior this fall, qualified for the 2009 U.S. Amateur.
