Editor's Note: Rice senior Robert Burrow became ill after Drew Scott announced his five-member squad for the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Intercollegiate. Sophomore Brock Wilson will now complete the Owls' lineup for next week.
After a week off, Rice University's golf team returns to action on Monday when the Owls open play at the 2010 Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament begins a stretch of the fall season when the Owls will be on the road for three straight tournaments.
"It was good to have an off week in preparation for three solid tournaments in a row," said Rice coach Drew Scott. "I feel like we are still improving and it was good to have a week off to work on our games. We had a good week of practice and Chris Contreras played well this week and earned a spot in the starting five."
Contreras moves back into the Rice lineup after seeing action in the team's first tournament of the fall.
Rice is coming off an eight-place finish at the UTA/Watcherchase Invitational played in late September. Senior golfer Michael Whitehead tied for fifth at the UTA event, carding a three-under par 213. Freshman Jeff Wibawa also posted a Top 20 finish at the tournament.
"Our top three players - Michael Whitehead, Jeff Wibawa and Robert Burrow - are currently playing really well," Scott said. "I expect them to lead this team to an improved finish. Erik Mayer and Chris Contreras should feel more comfortable in the lineup and hopefully will have better results as the semester goes on."
Rice returns to Squire Creek Country Club (Par 72, 7105 yards) after playing the Choudrant, La., course both in the fall and spring last season.
"We have a lot of experience on this golf course, having played this course every year," Scott said. "It's a long, hilly golf course with firm, fast greens. It's a fun golf course to play. If you play well, you can get rewarded with some birdies. But it is challenging enough to make you think and you have to play conservative at times."
The tournament is slated for 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes played on Tuesday.
