SPRINGFIELD, La. - Rice University's senior tandem of Christopher Brown and Michael Buttacavoli shot subpar golf Monday afternoon as the Owls took sole possession of first place after two rounds of the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate.
Rice takes a one-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round of the tournament hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University.
The Owls have a two-round score of 579 and are one shot ahead of Louisiana-Lafayette and the University of New Orleans. Sparked by a first-round 67 by Sebastian Szirmak, UNO had a 10-stroke lead after Monday's first round but the Privateers shot a 300 later in the day to fall back into a tie for second.
"We are very surprised to be in the position we are in because UNO is a very good golf team," Rice coach Drew Scott said. "They won Louisiana Tech's tournament earlier this year. They have the ability to fire another great score tomorrow. We are going to have to play our best to hold everyone off."
Brown fired a 69 Monday afternoon after carding a 73 earlier in the day. His two-round score of 142 (-2) puts him in a tie for third. Buttacavoli played steady Monday, shooting a 72-71 for a two-round 143 (-1). He heads into Tuesday's final round tied for sixth.
Rice freshman Jade Scott, who captured the individual title at last week's David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by LSU, is currently tied for 12th after carding a 145 (+1) on Monday.
"We came here to try to win a golf tournament," Scott said. "Our guys are motivated to play their best. We also have some players who want to win another golf tournament. Christopher Brown, Michael Buttacavoli and Jade Scott are all in the hunt for an individual title. I don't think they have any nervousness because they have played in lead groups before.
"Hopefeully we go out and play well tomorrow and see how things shake out."
Rice will be paired with Louisiana-Lafayette and New Orleans for Tuesday's final round. UL-Lafayette's Andrew Noto led the field Monday with a two-round score of 140 (-4).
