Rice Women Running at C-USA Cross Country Championship

IRVING, Texas - The 2009 Conference USA men's and women's cross country championships are set for Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Bear Branch Sportsfields in The Woodlands, Texas. For the first time in league history, the University of Houston will play host to the one-day event with free admission.
The championships will feature the men's 8K race at 9 a.m. CDT, to be followed by the women's 5K race at 10 a.m. Following the completion of both championships, team and individual awards will be distributed.
The first 21 runners to cross the finish line at the conference championships will be named to the C-USA All-Conference first (1-7), second (8-14), and third (15-21) teams. East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP each have a men's and women's team. SMU, Southern Miss and UAB have women's teams only.
Starting for Jim Bevan's Owls will be Halsey Fowler, Georgina Norton, Johanna Ohm, Heather Olson, Addie Quinn, Michaela Reynolds, Claire Shorall Marie Thompson, and Erin Watson.
Last year, the 20th-ranked Rice Owls finished second with 50 points after Nicole Mericle (17:08), Lennie Waite (17:18) and Allison Pye (17:21) crossed consecutively in third, fourth, and fifth places.
Silje Fjortoft posted a course record at last year's championship with a 5K time of 16:46 as she led SMU to their first C-USA crown in school history and earned an automatic bid to the South Central Regional meet. Her 40th-place performance at nationals led SMU to a C-USA team-best finish of 20th. Fjortoft's time of 20:50.4 in the 6K race placed her 50th.
