BATON ROUGE - Rice University freshman Jade Scott shot an opening-round 67 and heads into Tuesday's final round tied for eighth at the David Toms Intercollegiate.
The Owls are currently in ninth place after carding a two-round score of 572 (+4) on Monday. With the threat of rain from the same weather system which passed through Houston Monday, the final round will be a shotgun start. Rice will be paired with Mississippi State and Northwestern on Tuesday.
Scott's 67 tied for the fifth-best score by a Rice player since the mid-1980s. He shot a one-over 72 during Monday's afternoon round for a two-round score of 139.
"Jade played well today," said Rice coach Drew Scott. "He could have played better in the afternoon but I know he is excited to get back on the course tomorrow and have another round in the 60s."
Scott will be paired with two of the three other golfers tied with two-round scores of 139 - Northwestern's Nicholas Losole and Mississippi State's Robi Calvesbert.
Northwestern (571) is one stroke ahead of the Owls in eighth place while Mississippi State (567) is five strokes in front of Rice in seventh place.
"We were consistent today," Scott said. "We didn't have a round over 73 today. A lot of teams are under par while we only had two rounds under par. We're close enough to make a move three or four spots if we have a great round on Tuesday."
Rice senior Christopher Brown had the Owls' other sub-par round, shooting a 70 Monday afternoon. He has a two-round score of 142 (E) and is currently tied for 22nd.
LSU's John Peterson shot a 132, firing back-to-back rounds of 66 and has a two-stroke lead over Kent State's Mackenzie Hughes who is currently second individually.
Thanks in good part to Peterson's play, the Tigers have a three-stroke lead in team play over Kent State. LSU shot a 558 (-10) followed by Kent State's 561 while Southeastern Louisiana is tied for third after firing a 564.
